Winterizing Your RV

The majority of RV owners tend to head south for the winter, however there are a few people that need to prepare for winter. This week we’re going to cover some step-by-step tips for winterizing your RV and making sure that none of your pipes or water heater end up bursting.

Drain all water from the plumbing system and fill it with potable antifreeze.
On the undercarriage of your RV you’ll find the low-point valve. You need to open this valve. After the valve is open, get into your RV and open all of your sink and shower valves, also flush the toilet. Turn on all of your sink and shower faucets in the RV so those can drain too.

Install an anti-freeze installation kit. All you need to do is insert the valve after you detach the inlet line from the water pressure pump. You will point the valve handle toward the transparent hose that comes in the kit. You’ll also want to put that hose in a jug of potable antifreeze. Taking care of getting anti-freeze into all of your RV plumbing.
Install a water-heater bypass set. A series of valves that will keep antifreeze from going into the water heater. We recommend taking your RV to your local Seguin motor home mechanic and have him do it.
Completely drain your water heater. If any water is left in the tank, it will freeze and burst the heater.

Open the drain petcock on the heater, then open the relief valve on the heater so air can get in and push the water you’re trying to drain out. Once done, close the petcock and the valve so you don’t have to remember next spring when you’re de-winterizing your RV.

Run the anti-freeze through your system. Turn on each sink, faucet and shower on individually (cold/hot faucets) and run the until you see potable anti-freeze, not water. Be sure to run anti-freeze until traps and drains are covered so they don’t freeze.

Making sure you properly winterize your RV can save you a lot of headache in the long run and ensure that your RV is ready to go come Spring!
